Legend (1) Prodigy (2) and Champion (3) Book reviews By Marie Lu

Disclaimer: I have the summaries for all three books in here but don’t read the other summaries if you haven’t even read the first book! My opinion is at the bottom of the post.

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths – until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

Injured and on the run, it has been seven days since June and Day barely escaped Los Angeles and the Republic with their lives. Day is believed dead having lost his own brother to an execution squad who thought they were assassinating him. June is now the Republic’s most wanted traitor. Desperate for help, they turn to the Patriots – a vigilante rebel group sworn to bring down the Republic. But can they trust them or have they unwittingly become pawns in the most terrifying of political games?

–This is my least favorite out of the three because there were slow parts and not many action scenes. Still very well written and a very good book. The second book is always the worst out of a trilogy but that doesn’t mean it is a bad book compared to other series.

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps-Elect, while Day has been assigned a high-level military position.

But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them: just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything.

–This was a very satisfying conclusion to the series as a whole, every lose end was tied up and overall was a great conclusion to the series. There are a few slow parts and this one is reallly on governments, even more so than the last one.

The series as a whole goes in my all time top favorite list. Not only is the plot well thought out not just in the jaw dropping first book but also throughout the entire series. A corrupted government base line makes it all the better. Not only is it beautifully written, with lots of detail (to much at fist but the author learns) but the character development is like none I have see before. In the book you really see inside the characters minds and get to hear and see so much. The writing style between the very different characters changes so much I cannot believe it is the same person writing each. For June it is very detailed and to the point while when in Day’s perspective it is more like a normal person, but still better written than most books.

The only problem I found in it was that both the main characters were insanely pretty and perfect, well appearance wise, which annoyed me because even though both were relatable in some ways the whole out-going-prettiest-girl gets old in all these teen books. That’s why I really like Divergent because the author made a point in saying that neither of the main character were pretty but they were in love. However that did not ruin the book at all, just a little annoying for me, it may not matter to you.

Also an A+ in my book was that the love attraction was not spontaneous. It wasn’t like they met and made out, well I mean RIGHT way. Actually they only kiss a few times throughout all three books and there are now parts that get to sexual. However there is one intense kissing scene in book two and book three has a sex scene, but not a sex scene, all it says is he stayed the night so I’m not even sure if they had sex or not.

I absolutely love the series and the author and I am making all my friends read it! I will definitely read again in a few years and I rarely re-read books. Have fun reading!
